Through SA Booksellers all booksellers in South Africa can present a “United Front”. The constant liaison between the different sectors of the industry and provinces helps to ensure that the trade is maintained at a free and healthy level. SA Booksellers strives constantly to conduct the book trade in an orderly and professional manner, where the publishers act as wholesalers and booksellers are the retailers. Every opportunity is taken to encourage ethical trading policies at all levels. Mutual co-operation serves to promote the book trade collectively. Annual conferences provide the opportunity for booksellers and publishers from all areas to get together for the exchange of ideas and formulation of policies acceptable to all for the good of the trade. There is liaison with government departments concerning matters that affect the trade, such as import regulations, customs and procedures, the anti-VAT campaign, etc. and the constant co-operation with educational authorities. Book exhibtions and book promotions are organized from time to time and are of great benefit to the trade as a whole. Bookmark, the official magazine of SA Booksellers, is distributed free of charge to all members. SA Booksellers will negotiate with consultants for the training of staff of its members when requested through provinces. The membership list is circulated to state departments, libraries, schools and other institutions, recommending that purchases should be made from a recognized bookseller. SA Booksellers will negotiate general discounts and terms with the Publishers Association of South Africa (PASA) on behalf of its members. Individual discounts should be arranged by booksellers themselves. SA Booksellers will liase with PASA on various issues concerning booksellers. The SA Booksellers membership list is made available to any publisher who wishes to promote books to booksellers. SA Booksellers in conjunction with PASA does everything in its power to prevent illegal photocopying.
