Melvin Kaabwe was elected the new President of SABA at the 2019 SABA/PASA AGM in Cape Town in August. Melvin is currently the Head of Digital at Van Schaik’s, and has more than 10 years’ experience in retail and banking, having worked at Edcon and Nedbank previously. He has a BSc in Hydrology and still has a keen interest in the subject. Melvin has a passion for reading and grew up with books as a constant companion while traveling throughout the world as the son of a Fulbright scholar and UN academic. He also sits on the board of PUKU.

Riaz Hassim, the Executive Director of Book Express is a CA (SA) with an American MBA, spent most of his working career in the financial services sector, where he was a vice President at the former Nedcor Investment bank and more recently COO of the IFA division of Clientele Life. Riaz was instrumental in establishing the member Services Division at the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants where he also served as its board representative on its UK chapter as well as the International Innovation network. Riaz’s involvement in the retail sector goes back to when he got involved in the family business as a young man and he has continued to be involved in a number of retail businesses in various sectors.

Mohamed is a director at Pro Visions Books, and currently heads the Academic Sector of SA Booksellers. Pro Visions Books is a family owned bookseller specializing in the academic sector based in KZN. Mohamed holds a B.Pharm (UKZN) and an MBA (Wales) and has worked as a management consultant to corporates in the Pharmaceutical and Telecoms industries for over 20 years.

Hentie Gericke obtained his B.Econ and B.Ed degrees at the University of Stellenbosch. He taught Economics and Accounting at Ysterplaat High School for 6 years. Then he became a subject advisor for Economics and Business Economics. He joined Naspers in 1988 as marketing manager of Nasou. Since 1 July 2007 he is the CEO of Books 24/7. Books 24/7 has won the Sefika Annual awards for the best Education Bookseller of the year in South Africa three times.He was Chairman of the then Associated Booksellers of South Africa(ABSA) later SABA Western Cape for 15 years. He also served as President of SABA for two years. Currently he is the National Chairman of Education, Chairman of the Southern Region and National Treasurer of SABA.
