A year of acheivements

The Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) celebrated 20 years of existence in 2017 with amazing achievements, among others Professional Body Status, and having six members serving on the African Library and Information Association and Institution (AfLIA) Governing Council, acknowledgement as a key stakeholder in the development of Library and Information Services (LIS) in Africa. The Association is driving LIS for the growth and development of South Africa and in the continent. Below are some highlights of the past year.

LIASA Conference 2017
We have hosted a very successful 18th Annual Conference 2017 in Boksburg with the theme “Re-envisioning the role of Library and Information Services” and presented a very positive Annual Report on the activities of the past year at the Annual General Meeting on 5 October 2017. The full Annual Report 2016-2017 is downloadable from the LIASA website. The AGM report also provides details of all the activities of LIASA over the past year, including membership statistics.
In 2018, our 19th Annual Conference will be in Cape Town – be on the lookout for further announcements and the call for papers and workshop proposals.

Librarian of the Year 2017 award
We would like to congratulate our Librarians of the Year once again – the overall winners as well as the other Branch Librarians of the Year. These leading librarians make us proud and are worthy role models and strong advocates for the profession! The LIASA Librarian of the Year for 2017 is Mr Steve Mokhabuki (Limpopo Branch), the first Runner-up Mr Sidima Mngengi (Eastern Cape Branch) and second Runner-up Mr Jeremiah Pietersen (Western Cape Branch). Special thanks to UKS, SAPnet, and SABINET for sponsoring this award so generously.

SALI Trust – LIASA Lifetime Achiever award
The worthy winner of SALI Trust – LIASA Lifetime Achiever award, is Professor Seth Paul Manaka, one of the truly outstanding figures in the history of African librarianship and one of the stalwarts in the LIS profession in SA. Also known to be the first black South African Librarian and the first black University Librarian, the teacher, lecturer, professor and leader in the profession, has taught and mentored a number of library executive administrators and educators. His work counts volumes in the LIS Sector at large.
