Random House Struik has joined a growing list of publishers to donate ebooks to the eLibrary Project: http://www.elibraryproject.org, a pilot digital reading programme taking place in Benoni over the next 12 months.
The eLibrary Project pilot study is testing the feasibility of using Kindle eReaders at underprivileged schools in South Africa as a means of encouraging students to enjoy reading. It is currently being rolled out at St Francis College in Benoni, where all 60 grade 11 pupils at the school will have access to their own Kindle device for a year. Each device has been pre-loaded with the same library of ebooks. The titles are either free of copyright or have been donated by authors and publishing houses for the duration of the pilot.
Marlene Fryer, the publisher at Zebra Press, says: “This is an exciting initiative. By stimulating reading and helping educate South African learners, the eLibrary Project is a worthy cause that we are happy to support.”
Titles donated by Random House Struik include K.Sello Duiker’s The Hidden Star, Winnie Mandela: A Life, Max du Preez’s Of Warriors, Lovers & Prophets and Pale Native and popular natural history titles Basic Bird ID and Filmer’s Spiders.
